On Monday, April 27, the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Massachusetts, printed a great piece on how to talk to loved ones who are dying. It features the Rev. Ute Schmidt, the director of spiritual services at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Held in Ute’s hands, resting on her knee, is something I didn’t immediately recognize.
“What the heck is that?”
It was blue, with a white stringy thing on the side.
Then I realized, “Oh, that’s her mask.”
I could picture how the photo shoot went; Ute had removed her face-covering so we could see her pretty face.
I wondered: Will these masks become so part of our culture and society—like scarfs, neckties, and other accessories—that we will barely notice them?
Please. I hope not.
